Franco Dragone

Le Lido has entrusted the creation of its 27th revue to a magician, a director of remarkable live shows, Franco Dragone. A visionary director, he was behind the first ten creations by the Cirque du Soleil before founding his own company in 2000. Since then, he has had many successes, such as Alegria and Saltimbanco. He has succeeded in profoundly renewing the language of live shows, blending artistic virtuosity and technological daring.

The story of an encounter

This new revue is a project which took two years to draw up. The project is above all the story of an encounter between the team at the Lido and Franco Dragone: together they dreamt up an ambitious revue that clearly respects the tradition of the Lido and its Bluebell Girls, but is also resolutely modern in spirit: a show that is a sequence of tableaux in rapid succession in which emotion is raised to new heights with sophisticated dramaturgy, giant screens in the background projecting videos and multiplying the space, and staging prowess that alternates between moods of intimacy and superproductions, Bluebell Girls and dancers in magnificent costumes, more handsome and more high-performance than ever.

“Voyage au Paris des Merveilles”

The theme of the show, explains Franco Dragone, is a Voyage to the Paris of Wonders. It is an enchanting rediscovery of the capital, as we follow a young woman who leaves her garret room to make her way through the ranks to become the leader of the Lido review. The show stages approximately twenty tableaux, each inspired by the images that have made Paris famous: the Eiffel Tower, the rooftops of Paris, French-style gardens, chandeliers, etc. The creation is demanding – everything must be beautiful, down to the tiny details – and the show should resemble a giant glitter ball in which each spectator can find his or her own reflection, that of the emotions.

A talented team

To succeed in this, Franco Dragone has surrounded himself with a team of professionals from the world of entertainment. Jean Rabasse is the scenographer. He worked for a long time for Philippe Découflé and has been the set decorator on a number of films, receiving a César award for “La cité des Enfants perdus” in 1996. Yvan Cassar composed the music. He is a well-known musician who has worked with many different artists, live and in the studio, such as Johnny Halliday, Jacques Dutronc, Charles Aznavour, etc. He has also written music for film (Les Visiteurs) and has worked with stars from the world of classical music like Montserrat Caballé. For the show, his music has been inspired by all the levels of 20th century French music. The music, according to him, should allow the spectator to better feel and be more involved in the story. He has worked closely with a young Belgian artist by the stage name of Saule, joint composer and songwriter for the show presented by Franco Dragone. Saule, a singer songwriter with three albums to his name, has also worked with artists such as Benabar and Charlie Winston. Benoit Swan Pouffer is the choreographer. He is a Frenchman who moved to the USA 20 years ago when he went to study at the Alvin Ailey Dance School in New York. He wanted each of the BlueBell Girls to show her own personality. Finally, another Frenchman, Nicolas Vaudelet, a veteran of high fashion studios having worked with Christian Dior and Christian Lacroix is responsible for the 600 costumes the show requires. The costumes will be sumptuous, in the spirit of haute-couture, not forgetting the emblematic feathers.
