European Heritage Days | Our selection of cool & calm places to visit

This year’s European Heritage Days will take place on September 20 and 21. On these special days, sites that are usually inaccessible, such as the Elysée Palace, the seat of French power, are opened to the public along with many others.

These sites are very popular with visitors who will not hesitate to wait for hours in order to visit them… At Paris is beautiful we prefer the quieter spots, far from the crowds. Here is our “cool & calm” selection for the 2014 European Heritage Days.
There are three itineraries to choose from; on the trail of artists and writers in the 6th arrondissement, on the trail of collectors around the Parc Monceau, on the trail of aristocrats and illustrious princes among the private town houses and hidden gardens of the Marais.

#1 – An artistic and cultural stroll through the 6th arrondissement, the intellectual area of Paris.

The Ecole nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris (or more simply the “Beaux-Arts de Paris“) consists of a vast group of magnificent monuments. Not to be missed: the sublime, almost magical glass-roofed courtyard of the Palais des Etudes. The outside courtyard is also magnificent.
A stone’s throw away on the lovely place de Furstenberg is the Delacroix Museum, the artist’s final, very personal home. We also like the studio housed in the private garden.
A little further on, near Saint-Sulpice, the Museum of Letters and Manuscripts invites you to turn back the pages of history through the letters and manuscripts, but also the musical scores and scientific or historical treatises. A museum that has to be read to be believed!
The Church of Saint-Sulpice is monumental, one of the biggest churches in Paris and well-known for its heterogeneous style that was due to its long construction period (130 years!). If you are lucky, perhaps you may get to climb one of its towers…
Take a break at the Café de la Mairie, a typical local Parisian café. Take advantage of the outside terrace, weather permitting, and the view of the church of Saint-Sulpice.
Not far from here, beside the Luxembourg Garden, the Zadkine Museum is tucked away in a fabulous garden filled with sculptures by the artist Ossip Zadkine. The former studio and the house have been converted into a museum that contains other works by this Russian sculptor. Waiting to be discovered!
