From vaudeville music hall to cinema, the Bataclan is today a concert hall that plays host to some of the biggest names in the business !

Big names from the worlds of music and comedy

The Bataclan attracts some of the biggest names in music and comedy as part of an eclectic programme : it is a theatre and a nightclub, but it mostly holds concerts. NTM, Prince, Snoop Dogg, Eels, Oasis, The Kills, Stromae and Robbie Williams have all chosen to appear on stage here. David and Cathy Guetta organised their first parties there, and stand-up comedians showcased there, people like Jamel Debbouze, Jean-Marie Bigard and Dany Boon amongst others.

A little history…

The architect Charles Duval built the Bataclan in 1864, calling it “Le Grand Café Chinois-Théâtre Bataclan”. Originally a music hall showing ballets and acrobatic routines, the Bataclan went on to stage vaudeville pieces by Scribe, Bayard, Dumersan and Mélesville.
1892 was a glorious year for the Bataclan : Jules Réval, Stiw-Hall and William Cody alias Buffalo Bill all trod its boards.
In1926, the space was turned into a cinema. In 1969, it went back to serving its original purpose until 1976 when it was purchased by Elie Touitou who handed over the artistic direction to his son : it was the birth of a whole new programme.
Since 2004, the Bataclan has been run by Jules Frutos and Olivier Poubelle.

Chinese architecture

The name Bataclan refers to Ba-ta-clan, an operetta by Jacques Offenbach. The Chinese side took shape in the original architecture of the theatre that actually represented a Chinese pagoda. Zany colours like red, yellow and green adorned the facade.
The hall, which is under a circular walkway, has 1,500 seats.
