The Maritime Museum promises to be a visit that will delight young and old alike. Set sail around its varied and eclectic collections.

Naval paintings, weapons and uniforms from the navy, scale models of boats, navigation instruments, the Maritime Museum is simultaneously a military, artistic, historic, ethnographic and technical museum that shows the evloutionof the French Navy and its seafaring men from the XVIIth century to the present day.
Among its major displays, the flaship galley La Réale that belonged to Louis XIV, Napoleon’s imperial boat built in 1810 or the Charles de Gaulle  aircraft carrier are the highlights.
The models of boats are without question the high point of the museum because the history of this collection is so fascinating.

A little history…

Originally housed in the Louvre palace after 1748, the Maritime Museum was moved to the Palais de Chaillot in 1938, shortly after the universal exhibition of 1937 caused this monument to be rearranged.
We need to go back to 1678, when Louis XIV’s minister, Colbert, decided to strengthen the Navy and wanted to understand its technical progress. Therefore, he requested that craftsmen make him models of the all boats that had been built.
These creations were made on a scale of 1:12 or 1:20, and turned into a collection in 1739 by Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782), an inspector of naval constructions. He donated the collection to the king, Louis XV in 1748.
The famous series of French ports painted by Horace Vernet is also housed in the Maritime Museum.
