Les Berges | An entertaining stroll along the Seine

For more than 2 km, on the left bank, between the Musée d’Orsay and the Pont de l’Alma, the Berges de Seine are inviting you on a fun walk along the banks of the river Seine.

“Give the Seine back to the Parisians”

This project was dear to the former mayor of Paris, Betrand Delanoë. It was also dear to those who want to reduce traffic within Paris, to allow the city to breathe and to simply give the river Seine back to the people of Paris. The development of a new riverbank has replaced one of the portions of the former voies sur berge, the freeways for cars along the banks of the river. During the development of the project, it came under heavy criticism, in particular from drivers. But since its inauguration in June 2013, the new Berges have been supported by the people of Paris and have been adopted definitively.

“Yes, Paris is beautiful!”. A waterfront stroll and the atmosphere of a port

Walk along the Seine, at the water’s edge, in a sublime setting that makes you want to say over and over again “Isn’t Paris beautiful!” The monuments pass you by as you stroll along: the Musée d’Orsay, left bank, Place de la Concorde, the Alexandre III bridge, the Grand and the Petit Palais on the right bank…”Yes, Paris is beautiful!”

The development concentrated on making the space friendly and fun: stroll, relax or lounge, as a family or among friends. An urban port atmosphere, with a tarmac road surface and containers dotted here and there that house bars, wooden “mikados” (beams of wood like pieces of “Jenga”) are placed at intervals along the walk. In fact, Les Berges have been separated into 3 zones, named ports: Port de Solférino, at Orsay, port des Invalides, and port du Gros Caillou after the Alma bridge heading towards the Eiffel Tower.

Stroll, lounge, play, share…

There are multiple activities available and something for everyone: for the sports enthusiasts, jogging, stretching on the mikados or on the steps down to the banks. For the children, wall climbing. For strollers, the simple joy of the walk, broken up by the play areas and the reference points: you can hop from France to Australia in three bounds on the world map on the ground at Orsay. The children can play at being Indian chiefs in the teepees at the Pont Alexandre III.
Board games can be played with family or friends on the tables of the Zzz or the You outside terraces. You can scribble and draw and leave your mark on the giant slate. You can watch the films or operas that are broadcast on the screen, join in with whatever event is happening on any given day, enlivening the area throughout the year. You can also enjoy a drink, lunch or dinner at one of the various café terraces…including at Rosa sur Seine, or at Rosa Bonheur (the open-air café at Parc des Buttes-Chaumont) which has also opened here.
You are free to lounge or snooze, practise yoga, tai chi, etc. – on the Mikado platform at the Port du Gros Caillou. Finally you can, if you so desire, meet with friends for an evening drink, to enjoy the fine weather, the sunset or any other kind of exceptional event by reserving one of the 4 Zzz containers free of charge (Port de Solférino) on the official website. In short, for a few hours, all is well, you are in Paris, you are truly at home.
