The Château de Vincennes | “I’m the King of the castle!”

The sheer size of the Château de Vincennes will take you back to your childhood days… “I’m the King of the castle !”

The Château de Vincennes was a royal residence from Philippe Auguste to Louis XIV, and Charles de Gaulle wanted to make it the presidential palace of the French Republic. It is a prestigious illustration of French history.

What makes this castle so remarkable ?

Firstly, and in difference to the majority of castle strongholds that were built on high ground, on hills or on cliffsides, the Château de Vincennes is erected on a limestone plain. Furthermore, it is the largest French royal castle stronghold and one of the highest fortresses in Europe to be built on a plain. Outside of its architecture, the castle is also interesting because of the events which took place there. It is a place that is steeped in history. The castle deserves a visit for all of these reasons should you find yourself on the outskirts of Paris !
Two main buildings attract the eye : the gothic Sainte Chapelle located within its walls and the keep which is the tallest example of its kind to be preserved in Europe (52 metres). Within its wall, famous personalities from the XVIIIth and XIXth centuries were imrisoned, such as Fouquet, Diderot, the Marquis de Sade, Mirabeau… The view from the rooftop terrace is sublime; to the south, the entire vista of the Bois de Vincennes woods displays itself to the visitor and to the west, Paris, with the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame.

Be prepared for the climb up the stairs !
There are different ways to visit the Château de Vincennes : either alone, with a 75 minute guided tour, or with an audioguide.
We recommend wearing flat shoes for comfort when walking on the original cobblestones !
Of course, having said all that… don’t expect it to be Versailles !
